The Kingman Room opens at the Joslyn Castle

The Joslyn Castle in Omaha opened a permanent room and gallery for Eugene Kingman in the summer of 2025, built around his own easel.

A white corner wall in the Kingman Room hung with black-and-white family photographs of Eugene Kingman.

Eugene Kingman came to Omaha in 1946 and spent more than two decades at the Joslyn Art Museum. Across town at the Joslyn Castle, he now has a room of his own.

The Eugene Kingman Room and Gallery opened at the Castle in the summer of 2025. It brings together two things. One is a re-creation of his studio, with his easel, paints, ephemera and information panels on permanent display. The other is a gallery of his paintings and graphic work, rotated with the seasons, so returning visitors see something new.

The easel came from the family. In July 2025 we shipped it to Omaha with five boxes of archive material, for the room and for the print show that followed that fall. John Paul, the Castle’s Community Liaison Manager, prepared and designed the room, and most of the photos here are ones he sent Mixie Kingman Eddy in early August. The room had a soft opening at the Castle’s Summer Fete on August 16, 2025.

The Castle has been a home for Kingman’s work for several years now. It hosted A Night With Eugene Kingman in 2023 and the Retrospective and Art Sale in 2024, and unsold works from that show have stayed at the Castle, on view around the house or in storage. The room gives that work a settled place, next to the tools that made it.

The Joslyn Castle is at 3902 Davenport Street, Omaha. Tours have been offered Thursday through Sunday, with reservations recommended; check joslyncastle.com before you go.
