A retrospective and art sale at the Joslyn Castle

In the fall of 2024 the Joslyn Castle filled its rooms with 55 Kingman paintings and 15 lithographs, with part of the proceeds going to the Castle.

Event graphic reading Eugene Kingman, Retrospective + Art Sale, Joslyn Castle & Gardens, with a portrait of the young Kingman and three of his landscapes.

The idea started with a phone call. As Mixie Kingman Eddy recalls it, she called the Joslyn Castle on a hunch to ask about a show for her father, and the Castle said yes.

“Eugene Kingman: Retrospective + Art Sale” opened at the Joslyn Castle on October 18, 2024, and ran through December 31. It brought together 55 paintings and 15 lithographs, hung through the rooms of the house, and part of the proceeds went to support the Castle.

The work came from the family collection, which by then was stored on the East Coast. We had the pieces reframed and shipped to Omaha in September and October 2024.

Before the opening, Kelli Bello and John Dechant of the Castle talked about the show on the OMAPOD podcast. During the show, visitors could also watch the video from A Night With Eugene Kingman, the Castle’s 2023 evening about his life.

The show did one more thing for us. Works that did not sell stayed in Omaha, and the Castle has kept them on view around the house, in rotation, or in storage. The next year it opened a permanent Kingman Room and Gallery, which gives his work a permanent place in the house.

We are grateful to Amy Richardson, Kelli Bello, John Dechant and the Castle staff for taking on a show of this size.
