The gallery will showcase Kingman’s paintings and graphic works, with seasonal rotations. Over 10,000 persons annually are expected to visit this new attraction at the Joslyn Castle, opening in the summer of 2025.<\/p>\n

Joslyn Castle & Gardens invites to you celebrate the life and works of one of Omaha\u2019s most fascinating creative characters: Eugene Kingman.<\/p>\n

Kingman is most well-known locally as the longest serving Director of the Joslyn Art Museum and as the creator of the New York Times mural that formerly hung in the W. Dale Clark Main Library. Our \u201cA Night with Eugene Kingman\u201d will take a closer look his life, from his tenure as a mural\/lithography instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design, to his New Deal-era post office murals and National Parks Service 1931 Paris Expo Commission, to his time as a high-level wartime cartographer for the pre-cursor to the CIA.<\/p>\n

Attendees will get a rare opportunity to view original Eugene Kingman artworks on loan for the evening from private collections. Maureen Waldron, historian and chairwoman of the NYT Mural Steering Committee, will deliver a presentation that celebrates his life and contributions. Our evening will be emceed by author and historian John Dechant of Legacy Preservation, who is currently researching a book about the artist.<\/p>\n

Joslyn Castle & Gardens are proud stewards of the NYT mural, which is currently in storage at the Joslyn Art Museum while a new home is located where it can be permanently displayed.<\/p>\n

Gallery 1516<\/a> in Omaha hosted a beautiful exhibit<\/a> featuring the work of three twentieth century Nebraska plein air artists: Eugene Kingman, Augustus Dunbier and Robert Gilder. Special thanks to Patrick Drickey (Director of Gallery 1516) and his helpful team, Sara Bihlmaier and Suzi Eberly, for inviting the Kingman\/Eddy family to submit 32 Kingman paintings<\/a> to be displayed for sale during this exhibition. The Kingman\/New York Times Mural was dedicated at the Dale Clark Public Library in Omaha during a presentation by Maureen McCann Waldron. The Kingman daughters (Elizabeth Anne Kingman and Mixie Kingman Eddy), grandson, Quinlan Kingman Eddy, and nephew, Lou Kingman, were present.<\/p>\n

CELEBRATING THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CENTENNIAL
\nCENTURY of DESIGN In The NATIONAL PARKS SYMPOSIUM in SANTA FE, NM
\nJune 21, 2016\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eugene Kingman’s seven National Park paintings for the 1931 Paris Expo <\/strong>were displayed\u00a0in a\u00a0poster presentation during this special Symposium on June 20-25, 2016 in Santa Fe. \u00a0This poster, designed by Eugene Kingman’s eldest daughter, Mixie Kingman Eddy, features paintings of \u00a0popular national parks: (Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Mt. Rainier, Crater Lake, and Yosemite).<\/p>\n

Back in 1931 HORACE M. ALBRIGHT, the Director of the\u00a0<\/span>National Park Service, commissioned Eugene Kingman to paint large oil paintings of seven popular national parks, which were sent to Paris to be displayed during the 1931 Paris Expo. Albright wanted to attract\u00a0<\/span>Europeans to visit and experience first-hand America\u2019s treasured natural wonders. The idea was to lift everyone\u2019s spirits during the pre-\u201cNew Deal\u201d era following the Great Depression.<\/p>\n
